MOVEMBER NOVEMBER

 In General

MOVEMBER NOVEMBER  An annual event involving the growing of mustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide.

Imagine that – you can help the world just by not shaving. (I’m sorry which month do we get to help people by not shaving our legs?) I’m sure you’ve heard of “No Shave November” – a popular hashtag on Instagram? Exactly that. The Movember Foundation is a web-based, non-profit organization devoted to growing awareness and raising funds to support prevention, research and education. Their goal? To have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health.

The Movember Foundation was founded in 2004 by Adam and Travis Garone out of Melbourne Australia. In 13 years they have funded more than 1,200 men’s health projects around the world, such as Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, The Cancer Society and Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand, and LIVESTRONG just to name a few. They have raised hundreds of millions of dollars towards men’s health and that number is only growing. They focus on the main culprits – prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention.

Across the world, men die an average six years younger than women, and for reasons that are largely preventable. Preventable means we stay connected. Talking to others about what’s going on in your life, and offering support for others. According to the Mental Health Foundation, mental health problems affect nearly 25% of the population in any one year period. Men specifically face a unique set of challenges when it comes to managing their mental health. With the societal stigma of embarrassment of emotions in men – often preventing them from seeking help or taking action.  The Movember Foundation wants to bring awareness – urging men to reach out and talk about these dangerous stigmas.

Now you’re thinking, “How does my mustache help fund all this??” Donations are raised many different ways. The initial idea, is to donate the money you would have used on hair care maintenance such as razors and shaving cream. Another way is to put out the word yourself, maybe start a local fundraiser whether it be a website or a local event drive. The idea is to create awareness by embracing our hair; which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free. To educate yourself and others about cancer prevention, save lives and aid those fighting the battle.

So get to growing! And don’t forget about beard and mustache maintenance. We are big fans of Reuzel’s Beard and Shave line, featuring balms, shaving creams, a wash foam and after shave. We are more than happy to give you a trim or aid you in picking out the right balms or oils to maximize the regality of your facial hair. It is after all, for a fantastic cause.
